Al-Hilal goalkeeper Yassin Bono has spoken about his move from Sevilla to the Saudi club last summer, citing mental health issues as a major factor in his decision. Bono stressed the importance of prioritising his wellbeing and sought a fresh start in an environment where he could focus on his mental health. The support and understanding he received from both clubs throughout the process helped to ease the transition. Bono’s honesty and courage in speaking about mental health is helping to raise awareness and reduce stigma in the world of professional sport.
“It wasn’t me. I put all my strength and experience into it, but I couldn’t stay in the team because of my state of mind. I needed a change for my mental well-being. It’s impossible to play when you know you can’t fully commit to the team. I had very little time for my personal life. Training, walking my dog, sleeping and thinking about the next day’s training sessions consumed me when I realised I didn’t have the energy to continue giving everything to the club, the opportunity to leave presented itself,” Bono said in an interview with AS.
During the current season, Bono has featured in 36 matches in various tournaments, keeping 19 clean sheets. His current contract with the club runs until the summer of 2026. According to Transfermarkt, a leading football portal, Bono’s market value is estimated at €11 million. The goalkeeper’s decision to prioritise his mental health and make a fresh start reflects the growing awareness and importance of mental wellbeing in professional sport. Bono’s honesty and courage in speaking out about his struggles is helping to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues. The support he has received from Sevilla and Al-Hilal demonstrates the growing recognition of the importance of mental health support within sporting organisations. It sets a positive example for athletes and fans alike, promoting a healthier and more compassionate approach to the challenges individuals face in high-pressure environments.
